Midday Music playlist for Thursday, September 11

I'm about to resume posting weekly lists of concerts. If you notice I've missed a performance GPB listeners would like to know about, please write (middaymusic@gpb.org) and point me to details. Note: Much as I'd love to provide one-stop shopping for every single classical event in Georgia, and valuable though student performances and church singalongs may be, there is a whole state to cover. Just concerts by pros, please. Thanks!

Concert-wise, it's all Beethoven at the CSO's Saturday concert; the Cobb Symphony has an all not-Beethoven program; the Valdosta Symphony plays some Beethoven and some not-Beethoven. Details are here on those concerts and others. (Today on the air, Columbus Symphony music director George del Gobbo introduces Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Tomorrow please join Alan Cooke for Midday Music Requests.)

Today's musical newcomer is William Perry's Jamestown Concerto from 2006, written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English colony in Virginia. The solo cello acts as the narrator, introducing each section of the story (London 1606 - The Virginia Company; Settlements Along the River; The Long Winters; Pocahontas in London; and Jamestown - Four Hundred Years On). William Perry has had a long and successful career writing music for films and television, and you get some of that cinematic feeling from this concerto.

For details on live classical music around Georgia this week - orchestral concerts in Columbus, Valdosta and Kennesaw and the Eroica Trio's appearances in Dahlonega, Lookout Mountain and Columbus - please see Monday's post.

Three big new releases from three big names: pianist Simone Dinnerstein, violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Lang Lang. Enjoy!

11 AM

"The Berlin Concert" is the second recording by American pianist Simone Dinnerstein, and it's being as received as enthusiastically as her first, career-launching recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations was last year.

In this live performance in November 2007, Simone Dinnerstein ("Simona Dinnersteen") plays Bach, Lasser and Beethoven to an enthusiastic crowd at the Berlin Philharmonie. It's available from Telarc as a disc or a download.

Joshua Bell is among the world's most popular violinists, and Vivaldi's Four Seasons are among the world's most popular violin concertos. At last, he and they meet.

Josh Bell is backed by the English chamber orchestra the Academy of Ancient Music. As a bonus, Bell throws in the devilishly tricky "Devil's Trill" Sonata by Giuseppe Tartini. All just out this week from Sony BMG.

We hear the entire album this noon hour.

Did you watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Beijing? Recall a musical number with throngs of green lightbulb-clad dancers gyrating around a grand piano? Well, the young man playing that piano was twenty-something international Chinese-born superstar pianist Lang Lang.

The recording officially comes out next Tuesday from Deutsche Grammophon in disc or download form. We'll hear one today and catch the other next week.

Several Americans today on GPB. For the 90th birth anniversary of composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein today, the San Francisco String Quartet plays its version of Bernstein's "Gee Officer Krupke," from West Side Story. We hear Virgil Thomson's music for an arty film the government put out in 1937 to convince Americans of the need for dams on the Mississippi: The River. And from just last decade, by Christopher Theofanidis, sounds for string orchestra titled Visions and Miracles.

Other highlights include selections from Edvard Grieg's music for the drama Peer Gynt and the seldom-heard second suite of Caucasian Sketches by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, based on music of the Caucasus region (the area known as Georgia).

We're going for more than eight golds on GPB's Midday Music.

In the Goldberg Variations, Bach presents a beautiful initial tune, riffs on its bass line in many ways and finally returns to the opening tune. We hear the Goldberg Variations (in Glenn Gould's 1955 recording) plus variations on them - from Bach's own canons on that same bassline, to Gabriela Montero's Goldberg-inspired improv, to a rag on mandolin, piano and tuba.

Also on this glittering show, there's gold from the River Rhine, a golden rooster of Russian lore, the golden spike that connected America's railroads, goldenrods, a golden age and a golden spinning wheel. Phelps, schmelps!

John Powell was many things: a Virginian-born composer, an international concert pianist, a collector of Appalachian old-time tunes, an amateur astronomer who discovered a comet, and a racist who supported Virginia's Racial Integrity Law in 1924. (The American John Powell is not to be confused with the living British film composer by the same name.)

In the first hour of GPB's Midday Music we hear the mid-century symphony in which John Powell set folk tunes he'd collected during his years traipsing around rural Virginia listening to the locals. The Virginia Symphony performs Powell's Virginia Symphony.

<- This is a new CD of Puccini's popular opera La Boheme. It's the first American Boheme recording in half a century.

Captured in concert in Atlanta in September 2007 and released this summer, it features a fresh young (i.e. age-appropriate), not-yet-brand-name cast, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus led by Robert Spano. Norah Amsellem sings the part of the poor Parisian seamstress Mimi, and Marcus Haddock is the poet Rodolfo.

In the noon hour on GPB, we hear the second half of Act I, where Mimi and Rodolfo meet. They're in a cold garret, but as their hearts warm up the hit tunes come thick and fast.

(P.S. 8/18: The New York Times mentions the Atlanta Symphony's new Boheme recording in a substantial article about Puccini Sunday, August 17.)

Armed conflict has thrown the other Georgia, in the Caucasus region east of the Black Sea, into headlines this week. Did you know there's a well-known piece of classical music based on the folk music of that Georgia? It's by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, a Russian who after graduation from conservatory spent years living in Georgia conducting the Tiflis (Tbilisi) Symphony and studying the sounds of the region. We hear his Caucasian Sketches in the noon hour.

Many thanks to Eric Nauert, Russell Wells and Alan Cooke for hosting Midday Music last week while I played hooky. After a quick end-of-summer family getaway to the coast, it's back to school and I'm happy to be back with you and the music.

A few loose Olympic tie-ins on Midday Music: We'll count Handel's Water Music as a tribute toward sports of the splashy variety. Janacek's Sinfonietta owes its genesis to a gymnastics festival, so that's a fair connection. And for the geographic angle, Chinese-born guitarist Xuefei Yang plays The Chinese Garden by Stephen Goss.

And please note the season finale of The ASO on GPB, coming up this Thursday and Sunday evening.

Not to dampen your summer fun, but we've got a couple of real downers today.

The painting at left, The Isle of the Dead by Arnold Boecklin, inspired Sergei Rachmaninoff's piece of the same title, which we hear in the first hour of Midday Music. The music begins and ends with the repeating heavy, low pulses of Charon's oars as he ferries the newly deceased across the River Styx.

For The Wood Dove, Antonin Dvorak took inspiration from Czech folklore. A woman murders her husband. She remarries. But she imagines the plaintive sound of the wood dove to be the voice of her first husband. The guilt drives her around the bend. She kills herself. Again, not a super cheerful scenario: two funeral marches with a wedding and some chirping in between.

Enjoy! ;)

Not the most obvious pair of influences, but Ernest Bloch's dual inspirations in writing his Violin Concerto were (1) Indian songs he heard on a visit to New Mexico and (2) "the complex, glowing, agitated soul" he felt "vibrating through the Bible." You know the vaguely Mozartean theme from Performance Today? Remember the distinctive the All Things Considered theme? The theme for NPR's Morning Edition?

If you listen to much GPB, you've heard music or arrangements by Jim Pugh. Well, Pugh ("Pew") also composes music longer than 60-second radio "billboards." In addition to that, he's an award-winning trombonist who has toured with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and Steely Dan. We'll have evidence of James Pugh's talents at the end of today's show, when he soloes in his own Trombone Concerto.

A couple of notes: Tonight at 8:00 join me for The ASO on GPB, featuring guest conductor Hans Graf and pianist Ingrid Fliter with the Atlanta Symphony in Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Tomorrow, Friday the Fouth, Alan Cooke offers an upbeat Independence Day edition of Midday Music at 11:00. Friday Requests will be back next week. Happy holiday! - Sarah

Earlier, pianist Nicholas Angelich anchors a Schumann chamber work. To hear MORE Angelich in BIGGER Schumann, tune in for The ASO on GPB, this Thursday evening at 8 and Sunday at 10. He'll shine in Schumann's Piano Concerto with the Atlanta Symphony.

You won't find many happy faces at U.S. gas stations these days. But back in the 1930s, Virgil Thomson thought a gas station would make a great setting for his new ballet Filling Station, about one evening's dramas large and small. Filling Station was the first all-American ballet: American music, design, choreography, setting - the works. And it was influential. Thomson's success emboldened another composer to try a ballet with an American theme, and Aaron Copland's Billy the Kid would be on stage by later that year. We hear Filling Station in the noon hour on GPB. No prices per gallon are specified.

The place violinist Cecylia Arzewski would most like to be stranded is Venice. The actress she imagines playing her in a biopic is Greta Garbo. Please join me this Thursday and Sunday evening for The ASO on GPB (details), as long-time Atlanta Symphony concertmaster Cecylia Arzewski gives her final solo performance with her orchestra before retiring: the Violin Concerto by Aram Khatchaturian. Also on the broadcast, Roberto Minczuk conducts Russian favorites, and I speak with both violinist and conductor. In preparation for that show, we hear Cecylia Arzewski and her violin on disc on Midday Music, "playing" the part of the heroine in Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherazade, today at noon. (By the way, her name is pronounced Cecelia Ahr-ZHEFF-skee.)

Note: Wednesday through Friday, June 4-6, Midday Music will be hosted by Eric Nauert and Russell Wells of GPB member station WSVH Savannah (playlists). See you Monday. - Sarah
