Itzhak Perlman on Midday Music

Today on Midday Music: Itzhak Perlman in conversation with host Sarah Zaslaw. The violin virtuoso talks about answering fan questions on Facebook and recalls his appearances on Sesame Street, and we hear a new rerelease of him playing the Brahms Violin Concerto. That's just after the one o'clock news on GPB radio and gpb.org.

Midday Music playlists now appear, appropriately enough, on GPB's Midday Music page, http://www.gpb.org/midday-music, beneath the swirly picture and the swirly prose. Please find new playlists there, along with iTunes links where available.

Midday Music playlists are moving and improving!

As of this week, Sarah Zaslaw's daily Midday Music playlists are taking up residence on GPB's Midday Music page. Please bookmark www.gpb.org/midday-music. New and improved, with clickable links to iTunes! Meanwhile, the Midday Music blog will live on, playlist-free, with occasional posts about music on the air, in concert and in life. Stay tuned for the evolution. Thanks for your support!

Celebrating two anniversaries today, one small, one large.
  • First, ten years of my hosting this show. In honor of a decade of happy collaboration with the listeners of Georgia, I'm soliciting requests this week. Email yours to middaymusic@gpb.org or become a fan of Midday Music on Facebook and make your wishes known there. Thanks for your input, your support and your ears!
  • And second, of course, Independence Day. For those of us who didn't catch a pops concert with our fireworks, a few American orchestral classics. (Over time a Russian composer's piece commemorating a European war has earned honorary membership in this group, basically because boom-boom fireworks in the sky go well with the boom-boom cannons in the score.)

Two quick announcements before today's playlist:

1. Today is the end of GPB's fiscal year. If you have not yet joined GPB as a member or renewed your membership lately, please do your part to support your local public radio station today, at gpb.org/give or 800-222-4788. Thank you!

2. The beginning of July marks my tenth anniversary as host of GPB's midday classical program. I'd like to celebrate by playing requests - music you particularly want to hear. Please email me (middaymusic@gpb.org) your name and town and what piece you're requesting. Go ahead and deluge me with and I'll see how many I can fit in at the beginning of next week. Thanks! - Sarah
