On GPB we mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. This concert took place in Berlin on December 25, 1989, mere weeks after the historic opening of the wall. Leonard Bernstein led massed musicians from East Germany, West Germany, the Soviet Union, the United States and beyond. In the final chorus, Bernstein changed the word Freude (joy) to Freiheit (freedom): Ode to Freedom.
